A number of herbs belonging to the genus Jatropha are renowned for their medicinal benefits. The successive extracts of roots of three Jatropha species viz. Jatropha curcas, Jatropha gossypifolia and Jatropha integerrima were tested for their antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Micrococcus luteus and Escherichia coli and antifungal activity against Aspegillus niger and Candida albicans using cup plate method and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). The extracts were found to hold significant antimicrobial activity with MIC ranging from 0.78 to 12.5 mg/ml of extract.
